Our Services
Play In A Book in the classroom provides a fully integrated arts based curriculum that builds critical literacy skills using drama and immersion into an engaging story. Students are given the tools to bring a story to life, and our instructors use our proprietary materials and assessment tool to boost learning in an innovative way.
In School Residencies
Play In A Book is a CPS preferred vendor for In-school Arts Services. This is a 30-session program that includes materials and an assessment module that can boost critical reading skills by an average of 28%. Our direct instruction introduces acting skills while focusing on improving literacy.
After School Residency
Up to 16 students spend 20 sessions reading and discussing a classic story and learn how to bring the characters to life on stage for a culminating performance. Play In A Book After School includes an introduction to theater as well as drama exercises that help engage the student in the art of the story.
Small Group Intervention
Available for students grades K – 5 during the school day, this pull out program builds key reading skills in struggling readers through drama based methods. Lesson plan tailored to meet student needs based on test scores and teacher recommendation. Includes materials.
Professional Development
A two hour hands on workshop designed to prepare teachers to use the Act It Read It Series™ of books and companion workbooks to build key reading skills through drama. With purchase of materials.
Shakespeare Fights!
Students join a trained stage combat instructor in presenting selected fight scenes from William Shakespeare's works. This is an introductory course to the work of the Bard as well as a dive into rudimentary stage combat skills that serve to sell the idea that the Capulets didn't all that much like the Montagues.
Play In A Math Book
In this ten session residency, students grades K - 2 are introduced to Numbers Nunez and the Math Rats, a mariachi band with a knack for numerical operations. This course uses classic tales such as the Pied Piper of Hamelin and Rapunzel to explore algebraic thinking, addition and subtraction, base ten operations, basic geometry and more.
Play In Poetry
The works of BIPOC poets centered on identity are explored by Grade 5-8 students in this ten session program that culminates in the writing and presentation of their own work.
